Bu bir dram değil. Acitasyon, melodramatik anlar falan yok. Sadece birbirini seven iki erkeğin dümdüz, ama çok güzel anlatılmış bir hikayesi bu. İki insanın birbirini tanımaya başlamasıyla hikaye gelişir ve aşk acısı anlatan standart filmlere alışmış bünye bizi gözyaşlarına boğacak o kırılma noktasını bekler. Hayır. Keep the Lights On'da bu gerçekleşmiyor. Öyle bir derdi de yok zaten. En acıtması gereken sahneler daha az etkilerken, küçücük detaylarda gözleriniz dolabilir. Veya korkunç olması gereken bir anda veya tartışma sırasında gülecek veya tebessüm edecek bir şeyler bulabilirsiniz. Geçen hafta izlediğim Weekend'in aksine, bu filmde daha geniş bir zaman dilimine şahit oluyoruz. Yanılmıyorsam 10 yıllık bir ilişkiyi anlatıyor film; inişlerine, çıkışlarına, rezilliklerine ve zaferlerine bir bakış atıyoruz. Ne hissedeceğimizi de tamamen bize bırakmış yönetmen Ira Sachs.

This is not one of those overwhelming melodramas. It is just a story of two men who happen to fall in love. A very plain but engrossingly beautiful story that is just told straightforward. Two men start to know more about each other, they fall for each other more and more and then you think it is time for that breaking point that will complicate everything and make viewers sob to death but no, that doesn't happen in Keep the Lights On. That's not the point, anyway. Some super tiny details might hurt you more than the dramatic mental and or physical break downs in the film. Some serious moments and arguments will be interrupted when you find yourself laughing at an unexpectedly silly detail (it might be sth that just happens or sth that one of the characters says). Unlike Weekend, which I saw and loved last week, this film focuses on a longer period of time; it's 10 years if I'm not mistaken. Ira Sachs, the director, shows us the ups and downs, the failures and the victories of the couple and he does it without any pretentious effort to look 'super cool and super dramatic'. I really enjoyed this one.

Ulrike Böhnisch’in yönettiği bu belgesel, bizi eşcinsel erkeklerin dişlerine ve kurumuş dudaklarına doğru bir yolculuğa çıkarıyor. Belgeselde konuşmayı kabul eden bu insanların, yüzlerinin görünmesini istemedikleri için film boyunca sadece çenelerini, bazen kafalarının arkasını izlemek ve bozuk İngilizce’lerine maruz kalmak sinir bozucu olsa da, biraz sakin kafayla ‘neden?’ diye düşününce yürek burkucu, çirkin gerçek insanın yüzüne tokat gibi çarpıyor: Korkuyorlar. Sadece toplumdan veya ordudan değil, ailelerinden ve onlardan gelecek tepkilerden korkuyorlar. Belgesel boyunca, üç dört eşcinsel erkekten Türkiye’deki zorunlu askerlik ile ilgili ne düşündüklerini, gitmemek için ne tür aşağılayıcı aşamalardan geçtiklerini, gidenlerden de neler tecrübe ettiklerini dinliyoruz. Biz onları dinlerken, yönetmen de bizi insanın içini acıtacak derecede çirkin ve moral bozucu semt manzaraları eşliğinde Istanbul ve Ankara’nın ‘kötü’ bölgelerine zorunlu bir yolculuğa çıkarıyor. Çürük, sadece askere gitmemek için alınan rapora verilen isim olmaktan çıkıp, sistem ve yaşadığımız çarpık şehirler için Böhnisch’in bir yorumu oluyor adeta: ‘Siz çürüksünüz’ diyor. Bu belgeselde anlatılanları ilk kez duymuyoruz belki, ve Çürük çok yeni bir şey sunmuyormuş gibi görünebilir, ama aslında sunuyor. Ayrımcılığa, resmiyete dökülmüş bu rezalete ve aşağılamaya karşı atılmış başka bir çığlık sunuyor. Dün salonda oturanlar, yönetmenin ve belgeselde konuşmuş eşcinsel erkeklerin söyleyecekleriyle zaten aynı fikirde olan insanlardı. Umarım bu cesur çığlık, Çürük ve benzeri  filmler ‘underground’ kalmayı kesip daha fazla popülerleşir ve bu şekilde belki bi olasılık ‘kör taraf’a da ulaşır, ordaki insanların bakış açısını değiştirir. Ulrike’yi bu cesur belgeselinden ötürü tebrik ediyorum.

Directed by Ulrike Böhnisch, this documentary takes us deep into the teeth and dried lips of gey men. That’s totally because they don’t want their faces to be seen. It’s seriously annoying to watch their jaws and listening to their broken English till the end, however; when you give some thought to why they don’t want to show their faces, the ugly and heartbreaking truth hits you in the face: They are scared. Not only of the society and the army, but also of their families and their reactions, which is even more disheartening. Throughout the documentary, three or four homosexual guys tell us what they thin or have experienced about/during the mandatory military service in Turkey. In the meantime, the director forces us to take a tour around gruesomely ugly, demoralizing sceneries from the rough parts of Istanbul and Ankara, creating a gloomy atmosphere, which I loved. Although we’re familiar with this kind of stories and Çürük might look like it offers nothing new, it actually does. It offers another brave scream against discrimination and official humiliation. I believe people sitting in the theater yesterday already agree what the director and the people in the documentary have to say, but I hope Çürük and more films like this will become more and more popular and less underground so that it might, just might, reach to the ‘blind side’ and at least start changing people’s perspectives. Congratulations Ulrike, for this brave documentary.  

WEEKEND by ANDREW HAIGH, ISTANBUL FILM FESTIVAL

!f Istanbul film festivali dünyasına gökkuşağı filmleri (her şeyi stereotipik yapalım, yihuuu oley) kategorisinden Weekend ile adım attık bu sene. Bir Cuma gecesi, kafasını dağıtmak için bara giden eleman, orda genç bir adamla tanışır ve film yaşadıkları 3 günü anlatır. Hikaye veya senaryo namına her şey beklendiği gibi, böylesine bir aşk filminde önemli olan oyunculuk ve samimi diyaloglardır, aksi takdirde yere çakılırsınız. Andrew Haigh’ın yönettiği bu film ise Tom Cullen ve Chris New’in şaşırtıcı derecede iyi oyunculuğu ve yakalanmış o ufacık anlara ait gerçek diyaloglarıyla kocaman bir artı puan alıyor. Cüretkar sevişme sahneleri de   çok düzgün çekilmiş. İzlemeye değer.

My first film in Istanbul Film Festival this year is from the rainbow category (is it wrong to put films in categories like ‘homosexual films’? just asking), it is ‘Weekend’ by Andrew Haigh. Though there is nothing special about the story (on a Friday night, a guy just walks into a gay bar to shake the stress away and ends up with a random guy who will later turn into a three-day-drama), its two leads’ performances are amazingly sincere and the dialogues are just real. Because a romance like this is doomed to tank without some good acting or conversations. But this one is a good one. Definitely worth watching.
